Colorado Gives Day is December 7th!

Today, there are an estimated 170,000 unwanted horses across the nation, and 6,000 in Colorado alone. Of these, approximately 130,000 horses are shipped to slaughter in Mexico and Canada each year, where they are processed for human consumption. In addition, the BLM rounds up over 9,000 wild horses off public lands annually, but only 1 in 3 find homes.

Since 2004, Mountain Valley Horse Rescue has helped hundreds of equines in need find homes with loving owners thanks to people like YOU. At $6,000 per year for the basic care of each equine, your support provides much needed food, medicine, shelter and training, which leads to more successful adoptions. With each adoption, we are able to bring another equine into the fold to start his or her journey to a better life!

Colorado Gives Day takes place on December 7th this year and is the largest day of philanthropic giving in Colorado. Last year, we raised almost $50,000 on Colorado Gives Day because of you. With up to 30 Rescues in our care at any given time and a never-ending waitlist, these funds were critical to our day-to-day operations in 2021. You can help MVHR secure the futures of even more horses in 2022 with your support this Colorado Gives Day.

Schedule your donation to process on Colorado Gives Day, December 7th, by visiting MVHR's Colorado Gives Day page or clicking the button below. Enter or select your donation amount, and then click the green "SCHEDULE FOR GIVES DAY" button. Your gift - whether $5 or $1,000 - creates a brighter future for each and every equine we bring to MVHR.

Thank you for being a Hopeful Heart…Helping Horses!

Inclusivity Efforts

MVHR hosted several groups from the Eagle Valley Outdoor Movement (EVOM) this past summer and fall. EVOM is a group of organizations and community members, led by Walking Mountains Science Center, that is striving to provide equal access to outdoor spaces and opportunities for youth and families in the Eagle Valley.

As part of this movement, MVHR is working on being more accessible for more of our local community. Our first step has been having our waiver translated into Spanish, and more of our materials will be available in Spanish soon.

Our next step is to identify individuals who can help provide translation for our volunteer and other programs. Contact us at info@mvhr.net if you would be interested in helping with this effort!

Equine Updates

We had two adoptions last month - Moonshine and Doc! Congratulations to both of them and their new forever families. If you are interested in adding to your family, MVHR has lots of wonderful candidates available. Contact us at info@mvhr.net to learn more.

We also welcomed four new horses in October. Freddie is a 20+ year old mustang who is a little nervous, but very polite. He seems to have some musculoskeletal discomfort. Shadow is a cute gelding in his late teens who is sweet to be around and loves attention. He arrived at MVHR with a severe eye infection, but is quickly improving with antibiotics and anti inflammatories.

Our third and fourth intakes arrived together. Al is a handsome 20+ year old gelding who is well broke and very friendly with some front end lameness. Gem is a beautiful mid-twenties mare with a wise soul. She arrived in good physical shape and was able to go almost immediately to foster! We are looking forward to getting to know all of these new guys and gals better, and helping the guys get more comfortable and back to good health!

Finally, recent arrival Crow had surgery at Roaring Fork Equine Medical Center on October 26th to help improve his comfort level while living with ringbone. Please join us in wishing him a speedy recovery!

Volunteer Spotlight: The MVHR Volunteer Crew

In this month of gratitude, we want to express how grateful we are for everyone who gives their valuable time to volunteer at MVHR. From covering feeding and chore shifts in any kind of weather, to caring for all of our animals - horses, donkeys, mules, ponies, barn cats and chickens - to helping with repairs, programs and projects, the work of our volunteers is priceless.

This month, and every month, our staff and board are filled with gratitude for the amazing men, women and families who give so generously of their time to support MVHR. THANK YOU!

Tamian

Horse of The Month: Tamian

This 23-year-old registered Morgan-Arabian is about as sweet as can be and a volunteer favorite. He arrived at the Rescue in 2020 with a history of chronic founder and we continue to work hard and explore further options to help him be comfortable.

Tamian loves time with people, grooming, long hand walks, exploring obstacles and good company. He is still hoping and wishing for a sponsor or adoptive home! Could you be that special person for Tamian?

If you would like to sponsor or adopt Tamian, or learn more about our other horses, please contact us at info@mvhr.net.
