Hay is the Fuel that Nourishes the Herd! More Horses Need Our Help MVHR was able to welcome 27 new intakes last year. So far in 2022, our phone has not stopped ringing, and our waitlist isn't getting any shorter. In June alone, MVHR was contacted about 10 horses in need of help. The majority find themselves in situations where the fuel that nourishes them - hay - is no longer affordable for their owners. To help as many horses as possible and feed our growing herd, MVHR carefully plans our annual hay budget every year. However this year, the hay budget will be strained by two things that make hay enormously more expensive than we could have anticipated: this summer’s fuel prices and continued drought. Sustained Drought and Rising Fuel Prices As the drought conditions in Colorado and the West continue to worsen, less hay is available and it is more expensive yet again in 2022. Now, at peak hay season we have another challenge: high fuel prices. This not only increases the cost of producing hay, but also of hauling hay to MVHR. Both of these factors individually, and especially combined significantly increase the per bale cost to get this precious commodity purchased and to the ranch to feed the MVHR herd. MVHR is tremendously grateful for hay donations and we remain on the lookout for generous folks who are able to DONATE HAY! Every bale helps the horses, but even these donated bales will cost MVHR much more this year, with the fuel costs required to get them picked up and hauled to the ranch. Help us Raise $20,000 for Hay & Fuel to Ensure Hay for the Herd Securing funds for hay and additional fuel costs is what MVHR needs NOW to avoid pulling from other equine care necessities. Although MVHR anticipated a hay cost increase in 2022, we are calling on our community's support today to meet the unexpected increase in cost of this most essential commodity. MVHR will feed as many as 25 bales a day to keep our herd happy and healthy. That is over 9000 bales to the horses over this next year alone!
