MVHR Awarded Guardian Seal of Transparency

We are thrilled to announce that MVHR has been recognized as an EQUUS Foundation Guardian again this year.

The Guardians program encourages equine organizations to be transparent and accountable to the public through the disclosure of their equine care and use practices. Eligible organizations are equine charities that provide:

  • Shelter and rehabilitation for America's equines subjected to abuse and neglect, and at risk for slaughter;
  • Retraining and re-homing of America's equines in transition with careers as athletes, companions, teachers, and healers;
  • Peaceful and humane retirement and end of life for aged equines that ensures that they are able to live out their lives in comfort and with dignity;
  • Mutually beneficial opportunities for people and equines to partner for the purpose of contributing positively to cognitive, physical, emotional and social well-being.

MVHR is proud to demonstrate that we are operating at the highest standards of horse care and use. Thank you to our community of donors, volunteers, board members, program participants and community supporters who make this possible! For more information, please visit https://www.equusfoundation.org/guardians/guardians.php.

August Volunteer Opportunities & Events

  • Community Volunteer Day: Cancelled this month due to tighter group size restrictions.
  • Basic Volunteer Orientation: Limited number of sessions available by appointment.
    Mandatory if you want to work independently with our horses on a regular basis.

There are still LOTS of opportunities this month, including help with special projects like construction, irrigation, mowing/ weed eating, and our ongoing chores and maintenance needs below. Please contact info@mvhr.net to schedule an orientation or sign up for other volunteer opportunities, and keep checking our volunteer page for schedule updates.

Year-round Volunteer Opportunities

Feeding & Chore Shifts: When you have completed our Basic Volunteer Orientation, please sign up for morning, mid-day and PM chores or PM Feeding with shana@mvhr.netOpen shifts are shown on our website calendar.

Maintenance Help: We are making progress on projects that have accumulated over the past few months, but can still use some additional help. If you are handy and want to join our all-volunteer maintenance crew, contact shana@mvhr.net.

Events

Stay tuned for a special email letting you know how you can "Help the Horses from Home!" It will include a special video -- exclusively for our wonderful family of supporters -- so that everyone gets a glimpse of summer at the Rescue!

While we want to express deepest gratitude to the supporters who had planned to hold small, safe events in or near their homes in August, due to increasing caution over the Covid-19 pandemic, the Board has decided to cancel these events.

Joanne

Volunteer Spotlight: Joanne Contino

Originally from Long Island, NY, Joanne moved to Colorado last November to work as one of the chefs at Zach’s Cabin on Beaver Creek Mountain. She was supposed to work at Red Sky Ranch this summer; however, the pandemic had other plans and she was furloughed.

Their loss was our gain.

Roman and boy

Horse of The Month: Roman

Roman is handsome and he knows it! He spent his first 13 years as a stud horse with very little handling. During the training process, MVHR discovered he suffers from spinal stenosis, making riding impossible for him. BUT...he loves people and attention, so he is currently the “official greeter” in a stall front and center at MVHR. He also participates in our programs.

Roman would still love a home of his own! A home where he could stick his head in the window to say "hello" would be perfect. Are you that special person?

Roman is sponsored (but still available for adoption) with the generous support of Decorative Materials.

Horse Updates

Adoption News!

With so many adoptions this summer, it's becoming a bit of a challenge to keep up with the announcements. We're not complaining, though, and neither is the newest group of horses who are finalizing their adoptions - Stormy, Emma Lou, Minny (pictured above), Reba, Cassie, Ginger and Roxy. You might remember Roxy was returned last month, but we knew with her spunky, sweet personality she would find a new family in no time!

All of our "minis", Racey, Sparky and Pepe are also being adopted, but lucky for us will live at the Rescue where they will remain active participants in our programs.

And finally, Dolly, Hank, Harley, Mango and George all have adoptions pending. A big "congratulations" to all!

If you are interested in adopting, please contact shana@mvhr.net to schedule an appointment.

Baby Watch

Tango is pregnant! Bloodwork finally confirmed it and showed she is likely full-term. Fortunately, Tango has had a few weeks at MVHR to put on weight, be dewormed, vaccinated and to start getting more comfortable around people after her frightening adventure through the kill pens. We look forward to adding her foal to our Rescue herd, and giving them both the best lives from here forward!

New Intakes

We welcomed two horses in June - Ruby and Miss B. They might look familiar because they come from right across the street. The two mares are gaining weight and settling in well. We look forward to getting to know them better!

Summer campers

Program News

Summer Day Camp Wraps Up

It's hard to believe we have reached our last week of camp. Our final session, the new "Returning MVHR Camper" session, takes place August 4th-7th and then it's over. Seven weeks of Summer Horse Heroes Camp have flown by!

We'd like to give a HUGE shoutout to our fantastic Camp Counselors and Instructors - Kensie Redden, Wendy Mann, Shannon Ragan, Ashley McKinzie, and Kendra Scott. It is no small feat to pull off 7 weeks of quality camp programming for over 80 kids, and these amazing ladies made it look easy. Not even the added challenges of program horses changing as adoptions took place, and Covid-19 safety restrictions and regulations, could phase them. We'd like to thank them all for their dedication and outstanding work! MVHR is so fortunate to have these women on our Programs team.

Scholarship Donors & Sponsors

We'd like to thank our scholarship sponsors this summer - Lynn Janklow, Gypsum Creek Cruisers, and Johanna and DJ Jensen. Together they provided partial or full scholarships for 7 of our campers.

We'd also like to recognize SOS Outreach for their partnership with MVHR. We leased two vans from them this summer to transport campers to and from the Rescue each day while maintaining the required social distancing.

See you next year for Summer Horse Heroes Camp 2021!
