Meet Our Professional Equine Care Providers

MVHR’s mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome abused, neglected, abandoned and unwanted equines. To manage the care needed for the 25+ Rescues at MVHR, it takes a village. Most of the day-to-day care is handled by our outstanding group of volunteers and the MVHR staff. However, you may not know about the professional partners who are critical in other aspects of equine care – like medical, hoof care, and training – so this month we are sharing our love for those folks with you!

Dr. Silvia Stocker is our amazing veterinarian and handles all routine medical care, like intake exams, teeth floating and vaccinations, as well as more critical care. She’s been offering her gentle, expert skills to MVHR’s Rescues for over 10 years now, and her comforting demeanor and infectious sense of humor are much appreciated by the humans at MVHR.

Our wonderful team of farriers, who handle regular hoof trims and care, include our caretaker and trainer Joel Aguilar, Jose Perez, and Gary Hoza. Gary is especially good with problem cases due to severe hoof neglect and has worked to get Sparky, and recent intakes like Nova, comfortable again.

Finally, we have two fantastic trainers including Joel, mentioned above, and Kendra Scott. Joel has his own horse training business, JJ Natural Horsemanship, and plays a big role in training our Rescue horses to get them ready for adoption. Kendra lives on a 6th generation cattle ranch just down the road from McCoy, and focuses on groundwork and getting horses ready for our youth and outreach programs.

We love this outstanding group of professionals, who are not only part of our MVHR care team, but also part of our family. Each is integral to the success of our mission and we could not offer the level of equine care that we do without them!

Blue Moon

Blue Moon

Horse Updates

Blue Moon is the first to be off on a trial adoption in 2021! This handsome and quiet-natured gelding was a favorite during his short time at MVHR. We wish him well on his new adventure!

There were no new intakes in January, but we are working on welcoming new additions as early as this month.

In Memorium

Finally, we are sad to share that we lost recent arrival, Little Man, just after the first of the year. We suspect he was suffering from a large impaction in his intestines, and even with daily intensive care he continued to get worse. He was humanely euthanized on January 2nd, and now runs with the amazing herd of horses who have gone before him.

Volunteers watering the horses

Volunteer Spotlight: MVHR's Volunteer Crew

February is the month of love and we love ALL of our wonderful volunteers! From covering feeding and chore shifts in any kind of weather, to caring for all of our animals - horses, donkeys, mules, ponies, barn cats and chickens - the work that our volunteers do is priceless.

This month, and every month, our staff and board are filled with gratitude for the amazing men, women and families who give so generously of their time to support MVHR.
