A Horse Rescue that Boards Horses

Why do you board horses? You are a horse rescue, not a boarding stable. Doesn’t that take space away from horses that need to be rescued? MVHR gets these questions often.

The short answer is no. We would not board horses if it in anyway adversely affected our ability to take in and care for our Rescue horses.

The longer answer includes reasons like these:

  • It helps new adopters who elect to board at MVHR begin the journey with their new horse in a familiar setting, and with the support of MVHR staff and trainers who are familiar with the horse and with them. A successful start means a more successful future.
  • MVHR's boarding rates are some of the most affordable in this area (currently $325/month). Offering an affordable boarding opportunity grows the pool of potential adopters in our local community - horse lovers who may not have been able to afford board elsewhere.
  • Boarding income is good "business" because it gives our operation regular monthly cash flow to supplement the donations that are the lifeblood of MVHR. Most donations to MVHR are made around a fundraising event or during year-end giving. Monthly boarder income helps MVHR to run our operation smoothly day-to-day to care for the rescue horses even during months when donation income is lower.

Equine Updates

Cali, Crow, Buddy, and Shadow all finalized their adoptions last month. Congratulations to each of these new families! Salsa and Mango's trial adoption together should finalize this month. Next off is one of our longest residents with one of the biggest personalities, Roman! We have more about him in "Horse of the Month" below. If you are interested in adding one our wonderful equines to your family, please contact us at info@mvhr.net to learn more about our horses and adoption process.

MVHR welcomed two new horses last month. Aster is our first intake of 2022. This cute 5-year-old Arabian mare comes to us with some musculoskeletal issues. She is halter broke and we look forward to getting to know this beauty! Carmel is a 10-year-old mare from Delta. This pretty girl is incredibly sweet and friendly. She also has musculoskeletal issues that we are evaluating, and we expect her to not be rideable.

Finally, Estrella returned to us last month. Sometimes adoptive homes do not work out, and due to no fault of her own she is looking for a new person. MVHR always - and we mean always - welcomes a horse back if an adoption does not work out. This is true even years after an adoption takes place. The horses that touch ground at MVHR will always have a safe place to return.

Volunteer Sallie

Volunteer Spotlight: Sallie Clark

Sallie started volunteering with MVHR in February of 2020 and has remained one of our dedicated regulars. She usually covers the Friday AM chore shift and sometimes an additional shift the same week. Doing this even during the challenging winter months proves just how hardy and dedicated she is.

We recently asked Sallie about her background, experience with horses, what she likes about volunteering and more. Here is what she had to say…

Roman and boy

Horse of The Month: Roman

We are very excited to share that Roman will leave for his new home early this month.

Roman (originally known as Mister) came to MVHR when his elderly owner passed away. At the time, he was a marginally broke 12-year-old breeding stallion (think freight train in a halter). He is now a handsome, gentle gelding, with tons of personality and a regular favorite of volunteers and kids alike.

Roman touched many hearts over the last 8 years, and despite being unrideable, had many jobs here at MVHR: official greeter to all the people and cars, nuzzler of young people, and occasional program horse who gave countless kids confidence and perseverance while leading him over obstacles during summer camp. We are so happy for our sweet, charismatic Roman, but will miss him for sure!

While Roman is off the market, we have many others that could be your perfect match...

February Volunteer Opportunities

Please email info@mvhr.net to sign up or for more information, unless otherwise specified below.

  • Basic Volunteer Orientation: February 6 from 12-3pm or by appointment. If you want to help with our horses, this is the way to get started. No set commitment of time or schedule is required to help take care of the horses in recovery at MVHR, just this basic training.
  • Feeding & Chore Shifts: After completing Basic Volunteer Orientation, you can sign up to cover any of our three daily chore shifts - watering, feeding and mucking. Open shifts are shown on our website calendar. OR if you're not able to commit to an entire shift, you can pop out to help with mucking any time you'd like!
  • Tuesday Vet Days: Veterinarian, Dr. Stocker, treats horses from 10am-4pm.  If you want to help handle horses, this is a great way to learn about the Rescue herd's vet needs and treatments.
