Newsletter January 2025

And just like that we are at the end of January, and we have so much to share! The herd weathered well in the extreme cold earlier this month. Thanks to your generosity we can provide plenty of hay, blankets and love to keep them herd warm during these cold winter months. Did you know that eating is a big part of how horses stay warm? Keeping their metabolism going all day and night, and having shelter from the wind, keeps their body temperature up so they can manage the weather!

Adoption Trials hit the ground running this month, with four horses leaving for their new homes, so we are getting ready for new intakes in February!

Two Community Volunteer Days are coming up, so come to the ranch if you are looking for a volunteer training or would like to come for the day to help out! No experience necessary! Read on to learn more about volunteering at MVHR in 2025.

We are working hard on planning spring & summer programs, so check out the registration dates coming up for all of them. We get excited thinking about warmer weather already, and welcoming groups at the ranch as the days get longer!

MVHR Horse Updates

Our first finalized adoption for 2025 is Moon! We are so excited for this special Arabian to have found his forever home. Patron & Archie left for their new adventure earlier this month. And Big Boy Cheech started his adoption trail just last week with a wonderful gal in Eagle.

Daisy, Rocky and Dancer integrated into the herd and our quarantine barn is empty, with new horses arriving as soon as some adoptions finalize.

We are sad to share that we lost Concho this past month, the gentle Mule who was in foster care just down the road in McCoy. She was gently laid to rest after she could not get up. We expect her have been close to 40 years old and are glad she had a safe place to rest for her final sleep.

This brings the MVHR herd count to 32 horses. Interested in your next horse, or know someone who is? Amazing horses are waiting for their next adventure who are ready to go! Come meet Suede, Ginger, Clementine, Lucky, Cassidy, Rusty and Gem if you hope to get on the trail this Spring! Adoptions make it possible for us to help more horses on to next chapters of their own!

Calling All Adopters!

Have you adopted a horse from MVHR in the past 20 years? As we continue celebrating our 20th Anniversary through 2025, we'd like to recognize all the Journeys of Hope that were made possible thanks to those who adopted an equine from MVHR.

Send an update and a photo/video of your horse, so we can share it with our Community! Even if they have since passed the rainbow bridge, we'd love to share the wonderful home and adventure YOU provided! Email marleen@mvhr.net if you are interested!

Goodbye Chica...

Very unexpectedly we lost one of our amazing Program Horses this past weekend; Chica. This big gentle mare became part of the MVHR Program Horse Herd shortly after we moved to McCoy. In her time at MVHR, she connected with the smallest children, the most timid people and was the most gentle soul for those experiencing horses for the first time. She was a Summer Camp favorite because of her cuddly and calm behavior, and so many children and adults had their first ever ride on Chica. She was a pony ride champion, taking thousands of children on her back at the ranch and at different outreach events, with patience and grace. We and many of you will miss her dearly.

Thank you Chica for your many years of service to the many you touched and taught. May you run fast up there Sweet Girl.
