December events at Kitchen Collage and The Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch

MVHR January Headlines

Happy New Year!

What a busy and wonderful holiday season it has been! We would like to thank everyone who came out to support us at the Kitchen Collage holiday parties, our "Help a Horse for the Holidays" fundraiser at The Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch, or supported us online with donations on Colorado Gives Day or through our year-end giving campaign. Your generosity is much needed and so appreciated. It keeps our day-to-day operations running successfully and helps us to plan for the future.

In the spirit of setting goals for the New Year, here are a few of ours:

  • Installation of additional fencing – for better herd rotation and irrigation
  • Building a permanent, covered round pen – providing better opportunities for year-round training, resulting in more adoptions
  • Adding a heavy-duty truck to our fleet– assuring that the right vehicle is always available to haul horses and hay to the Rescue, or for urgent medical care
  • Completion of irrigation improvements – healthy pastures means room for more horses!

We thank you for your continued support and wish you the very best in 2020!

Volunteer Spotlight: Monica Shelton Reusch

Monica hails from Newmarket, NH and started riding horses when she was 9 years old. She spent most of her adult life in Boston, but now splits her time between Martha’s Vineyard and Vail. Monica has owned horses periodically throughout her life and volunteers at Misty Meadows Equine Learning Center’s therapeutic riding program when she is in Martha’s Vineyard.

Thankfully, Monica needed a horse fix in Colorado, too! She started volunteering at MVHR this past fall with her buddy Jennifer Haskell, and is “overjoyed to have the opportunities year-round now to nurture” her passion for horses. She says, “I find being around the horses gives me a sense of peace and well-being and I love how each one has his or her own personality.”

Thank you, Monica, for joining our volunteer crew and taking such good care of our horses!

MVHR's Wish List

Want to help support the horses and ranch operations by purchasing items on our wish list? You can find what we need here:

We had an amazing response to the wist list last month, so thank you to everyone who made a purchase! Unfortunately, we can't always see who sends the packages, so we haven't been able to thank everyone properly. If you make any wish list purchase and do not wish to remain anonymous, please include your name so we can show our appreciation!

And remember, you can support the Rescue horses anytime while shopping on AmazonSmile. Just make sure "Mountain Valley Horse Rescue" is selected as your non-profit and a percentage of your sale comes back to us...it's that simple!

Stormy and his new friend

Horse Updates

Stormy has a new foster home!

MVHR's sweet Stormy went to a wonderful foster home last month. You can see him meeting one of his new corral mates above. Looks like a perfect match!

Foster homes help provide care for our rescued horses, and allow MVHR to stretch our capacity to care for more horses than we can accommodate at the ranch.

Would YOU like to be a foster home for MVHR? Visit https://www.mountainvalleyhorserescue.com/foster-adoption to learn more!

New Year, New Homes

We have adoption applications on two of our newest intakes, Reba and Buddy! Their potential adopters came to meet them last month and submitted their applications shortly after. More visits and rides will happen at the ranch to ensure good fits for all before finalizing each adoption.

Summer Day Camp

Program News

Programs for 2020

Kensie Redden, our new Programs Coordinator, is busy planning for this year's program schedule. Summer Day Camp dates will be available soon, and registration will open mid-March. You'll want to mark your calendar when we confirm registration dates, as last year camp spots filled quickly!

MVHR will also need to start getting the horses ready for summer programs. We are looking for dedicated volunteers who would like to help with their training and even riding. More details about this commitment will be available soon, but you may reach out to Steph at steph@mvhr.net in the meantime of you'd like to be on the list to participate.

DONATIONS

If you cannot get out to the ranch to volunteer for feeding shifts, chores or other programs, you can still support the horses by making a donation on our website. Every dollar helps from $10 for a bale of hay to $6,000 to sponsor a horse for a year. With a steady herd of 20-25 rescue equines, the MVHR operating budget this year is $284,000. Most support comes from individual donors, like you.
