Make it Your New Year's Resolution to Volunteer

Volunteers are the lifeblood of MVHR. Care of all the equines - feeding, watering, and mucking - must be done daily, 365 days a year. With limited staff, MVHR relies on its volunteer crew to cover three chores shifts and a PM feeding shift each day. That's 28 shifts a week, roughly 120 shifts a month and 1,460 shifts a year! These "jobs" and the volunteers who do them are vital to our operations. Simply put, MVHR could not do what is does without our amazing volunteers!

Volunteering at MVHR alone is a worthy resolution, but can also cover other resolutions you may have like spending more time with family, spending more time outside, being of service, or getting more physical activity. If you haven't volunteered with us yet - it's easy to do. Simply attend a Volunteer Orientation (January 10th this month or by appointment). After that, you can volunteer as much or little as you want when it works for your schedule. Can't come on a regular basis? No problem. Sign up for a shift whenever it fits your schedule. Someone else signed up for a time that worked for you? No problem. Come help for part of that shift anyway. There is always plenty of poop to scoop!

As MVHR's operation continues to grow, so must our volunteer crew. To learn more and get started, visit the volunteer page on our website. The horses, ponies, donkeys, mules and people of MVHR thank you!

Equine Updates

We ended 2021 with a bang! SIX lucky horses entered the new year with their potential forever families. Cali, Crow, Salsa, Mango, Buddy, and Shadow all started trial adoptions in December. Fingers crossed each one will finalize this month. If you are interested in adding one our wonderful equines to your family, please contact us at info@mvhr.net to learn more about our horses and adoption process.

MVHR welcomed two new horses last month. Clifton is 20 something and was still a stud horse, although not used for breeding in many years. We took him straight to Roaring Fork Equine Medical Center to be gelded, and despite some health issues and his advanced age, he came through it just great! He is a sweet, friendly guy and recovering well at the Rescue. Chiquita is a beautiful, sweet palomino mare. She is 19 years old and arrived recently at the recommendation of our vet, Dr. Stocker. We are evaluating a hind leg injury that sometimes flares up, but expect her to be a light riding horse for someone special in the near future.

In Memoriam: Sparrow

This beautiful, spirited, athletic mare was tragically injured in the pasture with her friends in early December, and was gently laid to rest when her injuries proved too extensive to allow for her recovery. God speed, sweet girl.

Volunteer Raissa

Volunteer Spotlight: Raissa Wohlgemuth

Growing up on a little farm in Berthoud, Colorado, Raissa was introduced to horses through her best friend’s family and eventually got her own pony, Poncho. When her dad’s job changed, her family had to move away from their farm quickly and didn’t have time to find a new home for Poncho on their own. Luckily, they were able to surrender Poncho to a horse rescue. “We were really grateful to be able to have that resource to help find him a new loving home, and I really enjoy being able to give back to MVHR so that they can do the same for others.”

Torec

Horse of The Month: Torec

This handsome retired dressage horse is ready for a person of his own. He knows a ton, and is sweet and personable on the ground. He has been handled roughly at times in the past, and easily gets nervous under pressure, so he is looking for a kind, fair handler to have some fun with! Did we mention he's handsome and would look lovely in your pasture?!

If you would like to sponsor or adopt Torec, or learn more about our other horses, please contact us at info@mvhr.net.

January Volunteer Opportunities

Please email info@mvhr.net to sign up or for more information, unless otherwise specified below.

  • Basic Volunteer Orientation: January 10 from 12-3pm or by appointment. If you want to help with our horses, this is the way to get started. No set commitment of time or schedule is required to help take care of the horses in recovery at MVHR, just this basic training.
  • Feeding & Chore Shifts: After completing Basic Volunteer Orientation, you can sign up to cover any of our three daily chore shifts - watering, feeding and mucking. Open shifts are shown on our website calendar. OR if you're not able to commit to an entire shift, you can pop out to help with mucking any time you'd like!
  • Tuesday Vet Days: Veterinarian Dr. Stocker, treats horses from 10am-4pm.  If you want to help handle horses, this is a great way to learn about the Rescue herd's vet needs and treatments.
