Make a Difference to a Rescue Horse by Becoming a Sponsor!

The basic care of one horse costs about $6,000 per year. With an average of 20-25 Rescue horses onsite at any given time, that's a big financial commitment and one that someone like you can help to support.

Sponsoring a horse is a wonderful way to help a Rescue horse at MVHR if you're not ready or able to commit to a lifetime of horse care. When you sponsor a horse, you help to purchase feed, hay, nutritional or medicinal supplements, farrier services, and veterinary and dentistry care. It offers you a meaningful way to connect with a specific equine, and allows us to focus on getting him or her healthy, trained and ready for the next chapter in life!

Already have a special connection with a horse that you'd like to take to the next level? If not, MVHR is happy to match you with a Rescue horse on the property. After you select a horse to sponsor, we provide updates on the care and status of your horse and encourage you to come out to the ranch to visit with the beneficiary of your support. You'll also receive recognition at the ranch and on our website.

For more information about sponsorship at MVHR, please contact us at info@mvhr.net. And if you have a special Rescue you'd like to support but are unable to commit to the full $6,000, we are happy to discuss different levels of support with you. You can see which horses are already sponsored, and those horses looking for sponsors, on the Current Horses page on our website.

"Hay! We Need Your Help" Campaign a Success

We did it! Thanks to 63 donations in June, MVHR reached its fundraising goal of $15,000 to purchase hay this year. These funds enable MVHR to meet the challenge of DOUBLE THE COST and DOUBLE THE QUANTITY needed of this most essential commodity for our large rescue herd.

As always, our amazing community of supporters came through for MVHR during a doubly challenging time of drought and pandemic. THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

Horse Updates

Minnie, who was recently returned to MVHR through no fault of her own, is on a trial adoption this month. We hope she finds her true forever home! Another recent intake, Salsa, may have found a foster home for the rest of the summer. If you would like to open your home temporarily, or forever, to one of our Rescue horses, please contact us at info@mvhr.net.

Star (#2) is the first of two new intakes to arrive last month. This gentle paint mare came to us with a severe case of founder or laminitis. Laminitis is inflammation of the laminae of the foot – the soft tissue structures that attach the coffin or pedal bone of the foot to the hoof wall. The inflammation and damage to the laminae causes extreme pain and leads to instability of the coffin bone in the hoof. Fortunately, we have been able to make her more comfortable with special wooden shoes and pain medicine, but she has a long way to go.

Moonshine, our second arrival, is a sweet 13-year-old palomino mare with a severe tendon injury. She has settled in well at our quarantine stalls where we will continue to evaluate and treat her.

In Memorium

Maverick arrived at MVHR in April with a severe hip injury. Walking was difficult and he could no longer lie down. Through his sweet demeanor he showed he was clearly in a lot of pain. We were able to provide him some comfort as we worked to get to the bottom of his diagnosis; however, an ultrasound last month showed his pelvis was fractured some time ago. Knowing the extent of his injury that would likely never heal, we made the difficult decision to lay him to rest. Rest easy, sweet boy.

Jenna and Alee

Volunteer Spotlight: Jenna and Alee

Jenna Oppenheimer and Alee Germiller have only started volunteering recently, but they have already accrued more volunteer hours than most people do in months. Both work for the Town of Vail, but live in Leadville, making their commitment to come to McCoy even more impressive!

Mango

Horse of The Month: Mango

This pretty, palomino, mid-teens quarter horse mare is friendly, sweet, and coming along well under saddle (and bareback)!

Mango arrived with Tango last summer after a compassionate horse person saved them from the kill pens. Although slow to warm up because of rough treatment in her past, she is a lovely horse once she trusts and respects her handler. We know “her” person is out there and we are ready to help her make that special connection!

If you would like to adopt Mango, or learn more about our other adoptable horses, please contact us at info@mvhr.net.

Special Opportunities to Visit MVHR

Birthday parties, family tours and service groups are available by appointment. Birthday parties have been a big hit - attendees might even get to ride a unicorn! - and are offered based on availability throughout the summer. Family tours are an opportunity to visit our facility, meet our horses and hear their stories. Families will also have a chance to groom one of our sweet Rescue horses. Finally, service groups will get to know our horses and develop relationships with the horse of their choice as they complete service projects around the ranch. For more information or to schedule one of these programs, contact info@mvhr.net.
