Help Us Bring Our Hay for Horses Campaign Home

Hay is for horses! And donkeys, ponies and mules. We are at 69% of our goal for our "Hay is Fuel Campaign" and want to thank all of you who have donated so far!

Hay is the most important resource for MVHR’s rescue herd. YOU can help us get to our $20,000 goal to support the unexpected increases in costs associated with hay this year.

As drought conditions in Colorado and the West continue to worsen, less hay is available and it is more expensive again in 2022. Now, at peak hay season we face another challenge - high fuel prices. This not only increases the cost of producing hay, but also the cost of hauling it to the ranch.

Securing funds for hay and additional fuel costs is what MVHR needs NOW to avoid pulling funds from other equine care necessities. MVHR feeds as many as 25 bales a day to keep our herd happy and healthy. That is over 9,000 bales for the horses over this next year alone! An increase of even a few dollars a bale quickly becomes significant and forces us to make tough decisions about cutting other aspects of horse care.

We only need $6,213 to reach our goal. Let's bring this hay campaign home for the horses!

Angel

Equine Updates

Paloma, Carmel, and Noche's trial adoptions all finalized in June. Congratulations to all of them and their new forever families!

MVHR welcomed two new intakes last month - Angel and Shadie Ladie. Angel is in her 30's, and as gentle as can be. She has some special needs that we are helping her manage, and is reportedly a great light riding horse for even the very youngest of riders.

Shadie Ladie is a spunky 20-something Arabian mare with some get up and go! We look forward to learning more about just what sort of rider this pretty girl would be best suited to. If you are interested in learning more about these two mares, or any other of our available horses, please email info@mvhr.net.

Horse of The Month: Speedy

This adorable older gentleman is about as sweet as they come. And…he's so fun to ride! Speedy has an amazing handle on him and a willingness to do just about anything. As with many of our older horses, he needs a few meals of senior "mash" (grain) a day, but after that he is ready to get up and go!

This 29-year-old Arabian gelding has many amazing years left and is ready for his new home. Could he be your partner for some light riding adventures? If you'd like to learn more about adopting Speedy, please contact us at info@mvhr.net.

Program Updates

MINI HORSE HEROES: FALL DATES ARE GOING FAST!

Our most popular program takes place two Saturdays a month! It's a fun way for kids ages 3-5 years, and their parents/caregivers, to spend time at the ranch. The little ones get introduced to the rescue horses in a playful way and will spend time with them while exploring developmentally appropriate concepts related to preschool learning targets. Each session will include learning about horse care, grooming & leading, and finishes with a pony ride.

Learn more and register at mountainvalleyhorserescue.salsalabs.org/mhh2022.

SUMMER DAY CAMPS: LESS THAN A MONTH TO GO

MVHR offers kids ages 5-14 fun opportunities to spend their days with horses. Day camps take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays through August 11th, 2022. Kids can sign up for one day or multiple days in a row and last minute openings have been available. To get on the waitlist, email info@mvhr.net. The day camp themes will vary based on the day or week and include Horse Heroes Day Camp, H.O.P.E. Liberty Day Camp and Horse Glamour Day Camp

No prior horse experience is needed to participate and MVHR will provide transportation from Wolcott. Full and partial scholarships are available for all day camps. For more information and to register, visit the Programs page on our website.

July Volunteer Opportunities

Please email info@mvhr.net to sign up or for more information, unless otherwise specified below.

  • Basic Volunteer Orientation: Available by appointment. Please email info@mvhr.netIf you want to help with our horses, this is the way to get started. No set commitment of time or schedule is required to help take care of the horses in recovery at MVHR, just this basic training.
  • Feeding & Chore Shifts: After completing Basic Volunteer Orientation, you can sign up to cover any of our three daily chore shifts - watering, feeding and mucking. Open shifts are shown on our website calendar. OR if you're not able to commit to an entire shift, you can pop out to help with mucking any time you'd like!
  • Tuesday Vet Days: Veterinarian Dr. Stocker treats horses from 10am-4pm. If you want to help handle horses, this is a great way to learn about the rescue herd's vet needs and treatments.
