MVHR Operations Update: Phase II

With Eagle County moving to Phase II of reopening on May 25th, we have also updated our operating protocols while staying in close adherence with state and local guidelines. Here is what Phase II will look like at the Rescue:

  • ALL visits to the Rescue remain by appointment only. Please get in touch with Shana at shana@mvhr.net if you would like to cover a volunteer shift or visit the Rescue for any other reason. This will help us manage and limit the number of people on the ranch at a time, so that continued physical distancing efforts can be successful.

  • While at the Rescue, we ask that you continue to comply with Eagle County's 5 Commitments of Containment: 1) I will maintain 6 feet of social distance, 2) I will wash my hands often, 3) I will cover my face in public, 4) I will stay home when I am sick, 5) I will get tested immediately if I have symptoms.

  • MVHR will be restarting many of our programs in June including Community Volunteer Day and Summer Day Camp! This makes it even more important to carefully manage the many uses and visitors to the Rescue, while staying in compliance with local guidelines to keep everyone safe. Fortunately, the vast majority of our work is outside and in wide open spaces where personal distance is very manageable, but for any time you are in close proximity to others or sharing common spaces, please wear your mask.

We are so appreciative of your patience and support during these challenging times, and look forward to welcoming all of you back - gradually - as we continue to move forward!

JUNE VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES & EVENTS

  • Community Volunteer Day: Saturday, June 6th from 10am-1pm. Must register in advance.
  • Basic Volunteer Orientation: Limited number of sessions available by appointment.
Mandatory if you want to work independently with our horses on a regular basis.
  • Happy Birthday Joel! Our caretaker and trainer will be one year older on Saturday, June 20th.

Please contact shana@mvhr.net to register for either volunteer event above, and keep checking our volunteer page for schedule updates. We will resume all regularly scheduled activities as we continue to make our way through each phase of reopening.

ONGOING VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Feeding & Chore Shifts: When you have completed our Basic Volunteer Orientation, please sign up for morning, mid-day and PM feedings or evening chores with shana@mvhr.netOpen shifts are shown on our website calendar.

NEW Evening Chores Shift: This is a separate shift from the PM feeding. From 5-7pm, evening chore volunteers are responsible for filling waters and scooping any poop in the corrals at the end of the day. It's a beautiful time of day to be at the ranch, and a great way to spend time with the horses if you don't have the training for the PM feed.

Got computer skills? Good with excel spreadsheets? Contact marleen@mvhr.net to help us with database management.

Maintenance Help: We are making progress on projects that have accumulated over the past few months, but can still use some additional help. If you are handy and want to join our all-volunteer maintenance crew, contact shana@mvhr.net.

Volunteer Spotlight: Our Volunteer Crew

There have been so many of you anxious to get back to the rescue that Shana is now scheduling shifts weeks in advance! We rarely see open shifts on the volunteer calendar anymore like we did just a few months ago. The call for volunteers for feeding shifts, chores and maintenance help has been met with an overwhelming enthusiasm for which we are incredibly grateful. MVHR has the best volunteers, and we hope you are getting as much out of your visits to MVHR as our staff and horses get from you!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Jackie and Willow

Horse Updates

Adoption News!

You may remember Jackie's photo was featured in our Horse Updates last month, and this month she is our cover model again because...she has a new home! Jackie is shown above in her new home with a companion you may recognize - our very own Willow. Jackie's new family offered to foster Willow, so Jackie would have a familiar friend with her as she settles into her new herd. We think that's pretty darn wonderful!

Roxy, Maddie, Loki and Whinny also journeyed to their forever homes last month. And Jasper the donkey, who was recently returned to us after being adopted a few years ago, almost immediately found his new home with Whinny. Can we get a yeehaw!!

There are several other adoptions in progress that we hope to update you on next month. During these challenging times, it has been incredible to see so many of our Rescues making their way to loving forever homes, and we wish them and their new families a lifetime of happiness!

If you are interested in adopting one of our wonderful Rescues, please contact shana@mvhr.net to schedule an appointment. Information on all adoptable equines is available on our website

New Intakes

We welcomed three horses to MVHR in May:

  • Morena and Lucy are the two new intakes. Watch for more information about these beautiful mares on our website as we get to know them.
  • Mustang Sally returned from foster just in time for all of the Summer Day Camp kids who love her!

As more Rescue horses find new homes, there are more intakes waiting and we’re tackling that waitlist as fast as we can.

Program News

Summer Day Camp Starts this Month

Our Horse Heroes Summer Camp allows campers to build connections with their “own” rescue horse, as well as a riding horse. This 4-day program includes the development of horsemanship skills like groundwork, riding and stewardship.

Through their time with the horses, kids will also develop a sense of R.E.S.P.E.C.T (Responsibility, Empowerment, Stewardship, Perseverance, Empathy, Cooperation and Trust). These values will be reinforced with daily activities.

There is a limit of 12 campers each day and all campers must be 8 years or older. We will be complying with all local and state guidelines to keep our campers and staff safe and healthy.

For more information or to register, click here.

High School Rescue Club

Welcome High School Rescue Club members!  We have an enthusiastic team of five incredible High School Rescue Club members. They will begin their year-long experience with a 4-day leadership and horsemanship camp in June, followed by assisting at our Horse Heroes Summer Camps throughout the summer. Stay tuned for more information as they develop and launch their horse rescue advocacy and fundraising campaigns.

Every dollar helps from $10 for a bale of hay to $6,000 to sponsor a horse for a year. With a steady herd of 25 rescue equines, the MVHR operating budget this year is $299,000. Most support comes from individual donors, like you.
