Community Volunteer Day Returns June 19th

After a long hiatus, we are excited to announce our monthly Community Volunteer Days are back! The first will take place this month on Saturday, June 19th from 10am-2pm. It is an opportunity to come to the ranch, meet new people, get to know our horses, and help complete monthly projects and chores that keep our facility running smoothly.

The day will be spent outside, so come prepared for any weather. We also ask that you bring your own lunch and a water bottle. We'll have filtered water stations available for refills.

All are welcome! Just let us know if you plan on attending by registering on our website.

MVHR's Rescue herd can't wait to see you back at the ranch!

Snowmelt Schooling Series Horse Show

Calling all Routt County residents! Come learn more about MVHR on Saturday, June 5th at the Routt County Fairgrounds. We'll be there from 8:30am until the show ends mid-afternoon.

The Snowmelt Schooling Horse Show helps students get ready for showing season and is a fun and supportive environment for all ages and levels of riders. We'd love to meet you, so please stop by our table to say "Hi"! We'll also be in attendance at the second show of the series on Saturday, July 31st.

For more information, visit the Snowmelt Schooling Horse Show event page on Facebook.

Herman and his adopters

Herman and his new family

Horse Updates

Adoptions are starting to pick up! Our big, handsome Registered Shire, Herman, was quickly snapped up by a fantastic new family who drove all the way from Montana to meet him. One of our beautiful mares, Ellie, also started her trial adoption in May. And Dakota, a senior needing extra care who went straight to an MVHR foster home, is so loved by his foster family that he will be staying there forever. What a happy ending for this special guy! If you would like to open your home temporarily, or forever, to one of our Rescue horses, please contact us at info@mvhr.net.

Our 2-month-old filly, Cora B, also got some good news last month. Her sponsor will be adopting her when she is weaned. Until then, she will be happily tucked in with her mama and we'll be able to watch her grow big and strong.

We continue to see a significant increase in horses in need. Sparrow, Bear, Chip, Salsa and Minnie all arrived in May. Minnie was previously adopted from MVHR, but true to our policy, we brought her back into the fold when her family could no longer care for her.

In Memorium

The difficult decision was made last month to put recent arrival Ariel down. As her crippled leg continued to grow in the wrong direction, and without any remedy for her increasing discomfort and immobility, this sweet filly was laid to rest alongside the others on the hillside overlooking the Colorado River. She now runs, fast and free from pain with all those who have gone before her.

Dee Tucker

Volunteer Spotlight: Dee Tucker

Originally from Arkansas, Dee moved to Steamboat Springs full-time four years ago and is one of our Routt County volunteers. A regular visitor to the area since the mid-80s, he also has a daughter who has lived in Steamboat for twenty years. It’s been a good place for him to semi-retire while still practicing dentistry part time.

Dee has been volunteering for about two years. He said, “I sought out MVHR because I love animals, especially dogs and horses, and especially those in need.” Dee usually works a morning chore shift mucking, watering and feeding hay. He also enjoys spending time talking with the horses and petting them, especially the new arrivals in quarantine.

Mr. Z and rider

Horse of The Month: Mr. Z

This handsome 18-year-old Arabian came to us last fall and was so well loved by his previous owner, it will take a special someone to follow in her footsteps. Responsive and with Arab get up and go, this handsome fella is looking for an intermediate rider for new adventures! He's doing great under saddle, as you can see, and would love to find his forever home.

If you would like to adopt Mr. Z, or learn more about our other adoptable horses, please contact us at info@mvhr.net.

Little Horse Friends Lessons

MVHR is excited to offer a horseback riding lesson program for children ages 4-7! Kids will also learn exercises to help them acquire additional skills required to ride on their own. Upper body strength is developed along with a growing appreciation of respect, patience, and gentleness.

Lessons are available either privately or in a group on Saturday afternoons. Find all the details on the Programs page of our website, and then sign up by emailing marleen@mvhr.net.

Local Business Support in Our Community

A special "thank you" to Vail Ski and Snowboard Academy (VSSA) for giving us a great deal on a gently used passenger van to transport our summer day campers to the Rescue this summer.

We'd also like to give a shoutout to Sundance Plumbing and Heating for installing our new sink and handwashing station in the barn last month - just in time for summer programs. Thank you!
