| Happy Sunday ~ Newsletter June/July 2024 It's been a busy June, so busy that we are combining this newsletter to share all that has happened as we gear up for an even busier July. The rescue is bursting at the seams, and we started the month of June with 33 horses in the rescue herd! With that many horses in MVHR care, Hay season will be more important than ever this year! You can help us feed this increased rescue herd by supporting our annual Brunch for the Horses Fundraiser! Read below how you can help! Summer Camp finished it's fourth week, and the kids have had so much fun putting ribbons and glitter on the horses, learning how to get a horse to follow without a lead line and spending time outdoors at the ranch. Priceless days for both the children and the horses. Still a few camp spots left for later in the Summer, sign up now! And volunteers...your help has been incredible during the May & June Community Volunteer Days. We are so grateful for your support in caring for & loving on the horses on a daily basis. Continue reading for more details and updates from MVHR! |
| HAY There! Hay Season is upon us, and we have committed to purchasing 150 tons of hay! to feed the horses for the next year. In addition, a number of the older horses require several pounds of grain each day, so each year we buy over $12,000 worth of Senior Feed & Ration Balancer to ensure the horses get the nutrition they need. We need your HELP! MVHR is working to raise $65,000 by the Brunch for Horses, July 21st, to keep Feeding the 33 Horses in our care. Donate TODAY by clicking below, or read on to donate in person at our annual Brunch for Horses! |

| Horse Updates Adoptions for Cremello, Felix and Truly finalized in June, and Bill, Sisco & Peanut started their adoption journey. As adoptions move forward, we are able to start Journeys of Hope for new horses Bo, Rebel & Harley and welcomed mules Concho & Gus. With these last 5 intakes we are overfull! All of these equines needed an immediate safe place so we made the room to get them support. Unless other critical cases reach out, we will hold off on any other intakes until some adoptions finalize. So if you know someone ready to adopt a horse? Click HERE to learn more about the process! Spread the word about Horse Adoption! Another amazing way to support these horses, is to sponsor a horse and make a donation! Riding horses especially are going as quickly as they come to us, so don't hesitate, come meet the herd today! |

| | Goodbye Gabe ... Sadly, we did lose one of our most wonderful charges this month, Gabe. Gabe came to us as a retired roping horse with some lameness that needed some support in hopes that he could be a light riding horse, or even a ground work/program guy. His sweet, obedient nature would certainly have lent itself to such jobs. However we found that his stifles (equivalent to knees on the hind legs of the horse) were "shot", basically the structure of both joints had completely deteriorated. We experimented with a number of analgesics of increasing strength and saw no improvement in his comfort. As his pain progressed his body condition deteriorated, a clear sign that he was in extreme discomfort despite his stoic nature. He rarely if ever laid down, and when he did he had a hard time getting back up. In short, he was showing us clearly, in every way, that he was not living a quality life in spite of our best efforts. Gabe was gently laid to rest and buried overlooking the river, where he joins a herd of valiant horses who have gone before him. It is these moments where we see most clearly the heartbreak of our work, but also know that it is imperative to give this most critical of ultimate care to those horses that come to us. |
