NEW! MVHR Summer Day Camp Program

Mountain Valley Horse Rescue is excited to offer kids ages 5-14 new opportunities to spend their days this summer with horses. Day camps will take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from June 7th through August 11th, 2022. Kids can sign up for one day or multiple days in a row, or spread days throughout the summer. The day camp themes will vary based on the day or week and include Horse Heroes Day Camp, H.O.P.E. Liberty Day Camp and Horse Glamour Day Camp

These summer day camps are the perfect way for kids to spend time with horses and have fun outdoors at our beautiful ranch in McCoy! No prior horse experience is needed to participate and MVHR will provide transportation from Wolcott. Full and partial scholarships are available for all day camps.

Salsa

Salsa, now known as Cedar

Equine Updates

Chiquita, Doc, Minnie and Estrella all have adoptions pending! Join us in wishing them luck as they each take the steps towards their new forever homes. If you are interested in adding one our wonderful equines to your family, please contact us at info@mvhr.net to learn more about our horses and adoption process.

Salsa, now Cedar, who was adopted in January, was recently featured on the "A Home for Every Horse" website. When she arrived at MVHR in May of 2021 with her buddy, Chip, both were emaciated and their hind legs were collapsing or knuckling over at their fetlock joints when they walked or stood, due to malnutrition. It has been remarkable to see them become healthy, happy horses again and extra special to see Salsa find a loving family of her very own. You can read her inspiring story at ahomeforeveryhorse.com/rescue-success-stories/salsa-dances-to-a-forever-home.

Harald

Volunteer Spotlight: Harald Mikkelson

A long-time MVHR volunteer, Harald joined our staff last month as the new Maintenance Technician. His previous work experience, coupled with his familiarity with MVHR, the ranch, our needs, and his passion for our mission, made him the standout candidate for this position.

Harald moved to Colorado from Pennsylvania in 2001, to snowboard and, up until joining our staff, had been working in the restaurant industry...

Bonita the filly

Horse of The Month: Bonita

Bonita is a sweet, 6-month-old filly who came to MVHR after being rescued from severe neglect. Virtually unhandled but curious about the kind people she has met, she is quickly gaining weight and recovering from parasites and malnutrition. MVHR is looking forward to helping Bonita find a life free from the uncertainty and neglect she experienced her first few months.

You can help support Bonita by participating in the EQUUS Foundation's "Stepping Out for America's Horses" campaign this month. We are excited to partner with the EQUUS Foundation for this campaign, which raises awareness of the positive impact of horses in our lives and their need for protection!

Program Updates

Mini Horse Heroes Registration Opens March 1st

Our most popular program is back this April! It's a fun way for kids ages 3-5 years, and their parents/caregivers, to spend time at the ranch. The little ones get introduced to the rescue horses in a playful way and will spend time with them while exploring developmentally appropriate concepts related to preschool learning targets. Each session will include learning about horse care, grooming & leading and finishes with a pony ride!

Learn more and register at mountainvalleyhorserescue.salsalabs.org/mhh2022.

Please email info@mvhr.net to sign up or for more information, unless otherwise specified below.

  • Basic Volunteer Orientation: Special BILINGUAL session March 5th from 12-3pm. If you want to help with our horses, this is the way to get started. No set commitment of time or schedule is required to help take care of the horses in recovery at MVHR, just this basic training.
  • Feeding & Chore Shifts: After completing Basic Volunteer Orientation, you can sign up to cover any of our three daily chore shifts - watering, feeding and mucking. Open shifts are shown on our website calendar. OR if you're not able to commit to an entire shift, you can pop out to help with mucking any time you'd like!
  • Tuesday Vet Days: Veterinarian, Dr. Stocker, treats horses from 10am-4pm.  If you want to help handle horses, this is a great way to learn about the Rescue herd's vet needs and treatments.
