Newsletter May 2026

It's been a busy month of projects around the ranch! With the help of so many wonderful volunteers we were able to work through a long list of Spring to-dos to get the ranch ready for Summer. From deep cleaning corrals, buckets and troughs to spreading composted manure, harrowing the fields and cleaning the hay shed. Sanding, staining & painting projects like the picnic tables and Blue Bird nesting boxes (Blue Birds help with flies!) all were tackled ~ no job was too big or too small with 300+ volunteer hours logged in the last 30 days!

Kicked off by 50+ people who joined us for the Spring Fling Help a Horse Day on April 25th, we had help from seasoned and new volunteers who knew how to get stuff done! And just last week, students from Ohio State University with the BUCK-I-Serve program worked at the ranch for five days, cleaning up the picnic area, taking down the old green house and working on fencing projects.

A HUGE thank you goes out to ALL of our volunteers who helped get the ranch looking so good! Thanks to all your hard work the horses have not just clean and safe but ever improving spaces to live, train and feel at home in, helping them on their Journey of Hope.

May is Adopt a Horse Month! Read on to learn what that means, and to see all the wonderful adoption updates! More adoptions means more horses helped and more new intakes have already arrived.

Adopted: Misty!

Welcome: Timber!

Welcome: Shawnee!

MVHR Horse Updates

The exciting adoption news continues into May with several horses graduating from their Journey of Hope; Bosco, Pard and Huckleberry's adoptions all finalized.

Misty finally found her person, with whom she built an amazing trust relationship in their 30 day trial, and Misty is now under saddle and going out on adventures!

Since the last newsletter, Missy Rae left for her new home where she will teach riding lessons and is doing wonderful! Rico entered an onsite adoption trial, and now has his very own girl for the rest of his life.

Zephyr, Parker and Bonita are all in adoption trials and the ranch is busy with adopter appointments, all who are meeting the wonderful herd we have available!

More adoptions finalizing means more space to welcome new horses in need. Recent New intakes include: Timber, a beautiful Dun, 8 year old quarter horse mare with a soft tissue injury which will require lengthy rehab. Shawnee, a pretty buckskin appaloosa mare who needed an immediate safe placement, and found her way to us thanks to the Colorado Unwanted Horse Alliance (CUHA). Pete, a 21 year old Haflinger gelding who is as cute as a button given his smaller size. And Cheech, a grey thoroughbred gelding who we are welcoming back after being adopted in early 2025.

You'll also find Ernie in quarantine. This sweet gentle giant draft came to MVHR in Jan 2025, and was in foster care with Summit Valley Horse Center since last spring and is now back at the ranch ready to find his forever home.

All of the above is possible, thanks to our wonderful donors, who allow us to help horses with anything they need.

MVHR has outstanding horses who are still waiting for their next loving home. Those that are rideable won't be here for very long. Are you looking? Then don't wait to check them out! A list of the Current Herd can be found by clicking below!

May is ASPCA Adopt a Horse Month

MVHR is participating in the sixth annual ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) Adopt a Horse Month, a nationwide adoption event taking place throughout the month of May to help more equines find loving homes.

We are grateful for the ASPCA for highlighting the importance of Horse Adoption Nationwide. There are so many horses in need of a new home all across the county and MVHR is excited to participate. MVHR receives calls weekly from out of state folks looking for their next horse, and traveling to McCoy might not be possible. We direct them to myrighthorse.org to find a partner rescue and meet their match closer to home. Are you looking for your next equine family member but MVHR is too far? Check out MyRightHorse.org to find a rescue near you!
