| | ...and just like it's the third week in October. Winter is knocking on the ranch' doors with colder temperatures and even our first freeze last week. The herd is ready for the seasonal changes and recently received their fall check-ups and vaccines. Staff is busy preparing for the weather fluctuations by ensuring sheets and blankets are ready, longer water hoses are put away and plans are in place to switch the water troughs in each corral to the winterized ones. We started the month of October with 40 horses on our census and remain over capacity with more horses on our waitlist. With winter right around the corner, MVHR will work hard to make room for those at-risk horses that need a place to land soon. Adoptions make that possible, so if you or someone you know is looking for a horse or could make room for one more, come meet the herd! We have a wonderful variety of horses ready to find their person! Finalized adoptions allow MVHR to welcome more horses in need, need that is always growing but even more in recent months. The ranch also remains busy with amazing volunteers and service groups coming to help around the ranch and love on the horses. We are grateful to have welcomed several schools including freshman from Vail Christian High School, 4th, 7th & 8th grade students from Eagle County Charter Academy, and Vail Ski & Snowboard Academy, all within the last month! Thank you to all our volunteers for helping the horses and the ranch! Are you looking to get more involved and spend time with horses? Our next Community Volunteer Day is THIS Saturday, October 24th from 9:30am-12pm. No need to RSVP, just show up! More details further in this newsletter! Another Family Fun Event at the ranch is also this weekend, MVHR's 3rd Annual Trick or Trot, this Sunday September 25th from 1-3pm. To learn more and to RSVP, scroll down! Also mark your calendars for "Beer for Horses" at Eagle River Brewing Company in Gypsum on Friday, November 21 where enjoying a delicious, locally brewed beer will support the herd! Continue reading for more details and updates from MVHR! | | MVHR Horse Updates! This past month Ol'Redd and Cody T, who arrived just in September, left the ranch for their adoption trial with a lovely family whose small kids will love them dearly in their sweet retirement years. Gus, the big bay gelding in this newsletter's header picture, entered his adoption trial and this beautiful guy will leave for his adoptive home early next month. And the ranch remains busy with more intakes in need of a safe place to land. We welcomed three new horses at the ranch and two directly into foster this past month, all from different walks of life. Magic is a 22 year old, cute as a button, quarter horse gelding. He is broke to ride but in need of a tune up, and we look forward to getting to know him under saddle. Jesse, a sweet 14 year old blind broodmare with one eye removed, who welcomed her last foal earlier this year and was referred to MVHR by the amazing veterinarians at Roaring Fork Equine Medical Center. Cassie, a sorrel mare who traveled all the way from Montana where she was part of a criminal abuse and neglect situation. MVHR worked together with Montana authorities and rescues to get this sweet girl to Colorado, to give her distance from her former situation and a new environment to mentally heal and find her next chapter. Ricky, a 5 year old OTTB gelding with Sweeney shoulder who went to a foster home to quarantine, as MVHR's quarantine was full! And Magoo, a 6 year old Arab Gelding with a front leg injury, who went to a different foster home to receive the extensive daily wound care he needs to heal. We are happy these horses made it to MVHR, so that we can help them in their Journey of Hope in a safe and loving environment. Interested in your next horse, or know someone who is? Wonderful horses are waiting for their next adventures! Come meet Maverick, Dancer, Barbie, Buggs, Belle, Smokey, Darcy, Daci, Dolly, Sierra, Cody, RayRay, Calamity, Betty, Larry, Blaze, Golie, Cheech, Keno, Latigo, Rebel, Freddie, Big & Seneca! Adoptions make it possible for us to help more horses with next chapters of their own, and for you to have an amazing horse in your life!
