EVHS Team Help with Hay

Hey, hey...we have HAY!

In keeping with the spirit of 2020, it's been a challenging summer for hay. The same drought that made conditions ripe for the recent wildfires, has also drastically reduced hay production this year. When something so vital for our Rescue herd's survival is all of the sudden lacking - and you're on a budget - that can be a scary thing.

Over the past two months, MVHR has worked closely with local ranches to obtain hay that was either discounted or donated. Once the purchases were made, we had to find a way to get the hay bales from the various fields to our stackyard. Fortunately, the amazing players and coach of the Eagle Valley High School (EVHS) football team agreed to partner with us! We made a donation to their team and kept them fed with lunches from Red Canyon Cafe. They loaded hay bales in the field for transport, and then stacked all of those bales in our stackyard more than once this summer. Just look at all that hay safely under cover thanks to these incredible young men!

With the combined efforts of everyone involved, MVHR was able to fill its hay shed for less than $7 per bale delivered and stacked. In a year when hay prices may get to $14 a bale, we are comforted to know that this year's worth of hay will get our Rescue herd through to next hay season.

THANK YOU to the EVHS Football Team, our caretaker Joel, volunteer Harald and all of the generous members of our community who helped make this possible!

Horse Updates: Still on Baby Watch

Tango continues to keep us all guessing about when her baby is going to come, so let's have a little fun while we are waiting. If you can correctly guess her due date, you'll win a fun prize! Submit the date only to info@mvhr.net. One entry per person. We'll track who claims which date first, and let you know when the baby arrives!

Adoptions!

Hank and Dolly have been adopted by the same family, and will be making their way to a new forever home in Edwards. Sally, George and Lucy are also finalizing their adoptions this month. We wish these special horses, and their forever families, the very best!

Interested in adopting yourself? Please contact shana@mvhr.net.

Volunteer Spotlight: Alex Ebert

When you learn that Alex grew up on a farm with a Shetland pony named Sandy and a Quarter Horse named Bretta Star, it’s not surprising she would be drawn to the horses at MVHR.

Alex made her way to Eagle, CO from western NY in 1990, and says, “when I saw the majestic mountains, I knew this would be my home.” She started volunteering at MVHR when it was still located in Eagle, and has become more involved again this year.

Her duties at MVHR are “doing chores as needed”, and boy does she ever...

Dakota at his foster home

Horse of The Month: Dakota

Dakota, who had been on our waitlist at one time, somehow found his way to Sweetwater Resort this summer. The folks at Sweetwater weren’t aware of his condition until he arrived – old, thin and not suited to be a trail horse – and quickly called MVHR to see if we could help.

As we started to come up with a plan for him, a woman in Eagle, who had lost a horse, called looking for a companion gelding for her remaining horse. It was the perfect situation for Dakota! He is now officially an MVHR horse and has settled in nicely to his foster home, where he is being spoiled and loved as he recovers. This sweet, gentle guy just needs a little TLC, and we are grateful that is exactly what he will be getting from now on. Welcome to MVHR, Dakota!

Help the Horses from Home

Our sincere "thanks" to all of you who have donated to our Help the Horses from Home campaign so far! We hope you enjoyed our home-grown video with recent stories from MVHR volunteers, program participants, sponsors, supporters and adopters.

In past summers, the MVHR community has been able to gather for brunches in both the Eagle and Yampa River Valleys to build support for the Rescue herd. Summer brunches in years past raised enough funds to sponsor 5 to 6 Rescue horses for a full year. Unfortunately, we cannot gather this year, but still need to raise the same amount of funds.

It is not too late to donate! Your continued support is critical to providing the daily needs of the Rescue herd and operating a working ranch.
